Keeping The Ambulances Stocked

Richmond Ambulance Each of our units at the Richmond Ambulance Authority (RAA) must be stocked with the right amount and type of medical supply each shift.  Through the hard work of the Resource Department, our medics know that when they reach for something, it will always be there.  RAA exceeds the state requirements for equipping each unit, and with the implementation of the “Quick Load Bin System” we have streamlined our restocking system, and also improved our ability to track and monitor our supply usage.  Since the implementation of the bin system, the Resource Department has been able to cut its supply costs by a third, and expects to gain more savings in the future.  Future plans include the addition of bar code technology and other inventory programs to give us a more detailed picture of our equipment usage, and help track our preventive maintenance.  The Resource department also has the responsibility of delivering equipment to crews in the field during mass casualty incidents, fire stand by events and decontaminating the units after every shift.  The Resource Department is an integral part of the Richmond EMS system.

Bike Medic Team PDF Print Email

Going Places Ambulances Can t Go

Richmond AmbulanceLarge-scale events that take place within the City of Richmond often present a public health challenge. Held in parks or other large areas filled with crowds, it can be extremely difficult to get ambulances to people who need them at these events. Our solution has been to implement a Bike Medic team. This specialized unit consists of paramedics who volunteer to ride bicycles and provide medical assistance when it is required at these large events. Approximately 25 paramedics make up the squad, which uses professional-grade police bikes equipped with mobile cardiac defibrillators, intubation kits, advanced life support drugs and other medical supplies. The bikes enable paramedics to respond to the scene much more quickly than they could in an ambulance. The Bike Medic team has proven to be extremely popular with community members, who frequently request their presence at events. Respiratory and cardiac calls are the ones most commonly treated by the bike medics, who must pass physical training and riding tests to earn a spot on the unit.
