Keeping The Ambulances Stocked
Each of Richmond Ambulance Authority ambulance must be stocked with the right amount of and
the right kind of medical supplies. Through the work of the Resource Department, our medics know that when they reach for something they need, it will always be there. The Authority exceeds state requirements for equipping each ambulance.
Through a new automated materials management systemand the implementation of a new supply requisition systemthe department is currently working to streamline the stocking process, while also tracking supply usage and monitoring costs.
Since beginning the automation process, the department has already cut its supply costs by a third and expects to gain more savings in the future. When the new system is complete, every piece of equipment will be tracked by a serial
number, allowing the department to monitor equipment history and usage, and ensure that preventive maintenance is performed on or ahead of schedule. The department is also responsible for cleaning and decontaminating each ambulance on
completion of a call and/or a shift. Keeping
The Ambulances Running
The Richmond Ambulance Authority owns 26 ambulances and several support vehicles. It is the
responsibility of Fleet Services to keep the ambulances maintained to the highest mechanical standards. Each of the departments mechanics are ASE certified and members of the National Safety Council. Like the airline industry, the
Authority uses maintenance and replacement procedures designed to eliminate breakdowns before they occur. It maintains an aggressive preventive maintenance routine whereby each ambulance receives bumper-to-bumper service after 5,000 miles
of driving. In addition to mechanical training, some of the members of the department have participated in medical training and have ridden along with the clinical care team to gain a deeper understanding of ambulance usage during a call.
Based on this experience, they have made a number of physical modifications to the ambulances to make them more user-friendly for clinical staff and patients.
