Improving Safety And Lives In the City
The Authority offers a number of public education programs designed to increase health and safety in the
community, as well as provide young people with a starting point from which they may launch a medical career. The Authority is actively involved in the promotion of public safety and prevention. Through its Medic Assist
program, the Authority visits every school in Richmond, meeting more than 10,000 children each year and training them in basic first aid and CPR. Bike safety, water safety, drug safety and other sessions are taught in
classrooms and community centers across the City. Recently, the Authority has been focused on middle and high school students, encouraging them to consider EMS as a career option. The Authority allows students ages 14 and older
to ride on the ambulances so that they can get a feel for what is really involved in pre-hospital care. For students who decide to pursue a career in EMS, the Authority offers on-the-job training, allowing students to bridge
the gap from the book training they receive in medical courses to the real-world experience that can only come from responding to emergency calls. The Authoritys Explorer Scout troop offers yet another way for young people to
get hands-on EMS experience. The Authority offers countless other free classes and training sessions for adults and childrenmany of which are designed to meet the special needs of individual community groups. For more
