Prior to 1991, City ambulances and medical equipment did not meet nationally accepted standards. Today, all equipment exceeds the states standards, with Advanced Life Support equipment present on every ambulance.
Proof Of Quality
In 1994, the Richmond Ambulance
Authority became the first ambulance service on the east coast to receive accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services (CAAS). It received another three-year accreditation in 2000. Out of approximately 12,000
ambulance services in the nation, the Authority is one of only 86 services to be accredited by CAAS.
CAAS is an independent accrediting agency that exists to encourage and promote the highest standards for medical transportation systems. It is considered the gold standard for quality patient care and operation within the EMS industry. The process includes a comprehensive self-assessment and an independent outside review of the EMS organization. This independent process provides verification that quality care is provided to the community.
